By Sherly Isaac

May 10th is mother’s day. I am glad to tell my mom’s story who played a great roll in shaping my life spiritually and developing my creative talents. My mom always tells us that in her childhood days she never cooked nor did she do any household works. When she got married she did not know how to cook and it really troubled her. She said that often she would cry thinking that she did not know anything about cooking. She learned it the hard way. But because of her frustrating experience she promised herself that she would teach her children all the skills necessary. I think she worked very hard to teach us all the skills she knew. She is a multitalented woman. If she would see a beautiful dress in the market, she would come back home and stitch dress for us in the same design. If she finds a beautiful craft item, she would make a similar item exactly like that or even more beautiful. My sister and I both inherited this unique talent from our mother. When we were in India, one of our neighbors always remarked, “I can’t believe it that you see something on TV and make that thing by evening…” Of course my mom also taught us how to cook delicious meals so that we need not to suffer as she did. That is the love of a mother!

When Adam and Eve sinned, they got separated from God. And because of their sin they deserved to die eternally and suffer in hell. But God could not see His creation die like this and suffer greatly. He promised Himself to save humankind at any cost so that they should not suffer in hell but find eternal peace and joy and live with Him forever. That is the love of God. He loved us so much that He gave His precious life for us.

Jhn 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Not only did Jesus give His life for our salvation but also for our well being and for our goodness too. He came in this peace-less world to give us peace. He shed His precious blood on the cruel cross to give hope to the hopeless. He died for us to give us joy that this world cannot give. This is the love of God which is available for each and every person in this world.

He said in Mat 11:28, “Come unto me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Yes, He wants to give us rest and peace. Like a mother He wants to comfort us and He wants to wipe away all our tears. No matter what you are going through today, He is ready to help you. Come to Him, give your life to Him and I promise you that your life will never be the same again. You will experience the peace and joy you have never experienced in your life. You will find new meaning for your life. Yes, my friend, there is a wonderful life with Christ Jesus, if you give your life to Him not only in this world but the world to come.

My mom’s another quality is that she is a woman of prayer. Though she was not saved in those days but still she loved the Lord and would pray without fail. She would read Bible and she taught us to read the Bible everyday and pray. It was her initiative and her prayers that we all turned to Christ and now serving the Lord.

In this mother’s day my heart is filled with gratitude and praise towards the Lord who gave me this wonderful mother.

Happy Mother’s day to all mothers out there! May the good Lord bless you and make you a blessing.

In previous issue you read that Jesus healed Nazeela Beevi miraculously. Please read next part here.

Hospital staff themselves made a large collection, put me in a convent run by sisters and said that they will be coming after some days, but they did not come back. As nobody came to make payment for my stay there, the sister sent me out. She said that the convent is for the sisters and not an orphanage. She gave me the names of several places where refugees are accommodated and suggested that I go there. She also gave me some money in my hand. I did not know those places or how to go there. So I went to Trivandrum District to the houses of the believers with whom I had previously stayed.

But they were all afraid for giving me shelter because my family members had troubled them earlier and they also knew that they were still searching for me. So they would accommodate me just for two or three days and would ask me to go somewhere else. When I go to another place, they would send me to some other place. In some places they asked me to go to such and such orphanage, Bible Collage or some other type of shelter. When I go there, they would tell, "If you bring a recommendation letter from the person who had directed you here, then we can admit you." There was nobody to help me and had no place to go. But the presence of Holy Spirit was always with me. The driving force, the compelling thought which was ruling my heart was only the anticipation of, "What will be the next miraculous thing that is going to be revealed through the miracle working power of Jesus?" Because of the excitement of knowing what the next move of Jesus would be, the trouble and sorrow I was going through did not seem big to me.

My routine was to walk through the streets, to sit where there was some shade, read Bible, when thirsty I would drink water from tap, when I felt too much hungry and could not get any thing else even after three four days, I would eat banana skin. While walking along the streets if I hear the sound of prayer, I would enter, sit in a corner and hear the word of God, if I am offered water or tea I would accept, if any kindhearted people give me ten or twenty rupees, that also I would accept.

By this time I had the opportunity to have my baptism. One group of believers secretly baptized me. From there I went for household work. But because people have seen from TV and news papers, the announcement that I was missing, nobody wanted to give me job. They put me in a train and sent me. I got down at Kozikkode Railway Station and there I saw posters on the walls with my photo and the news that I was missing. I did not know where to go. I was frightened after seeing my posters on walls saying that I was missing and thought, "People are paying attention, police also is noticing. If they recognize me, they will catch me and hand me over to my family. I stood at a corner telling, "Now what am I to do, God?" Then a thought came into my mind that when David was before king Achish, he posed as a madman and escaped from his clutches. Why not do the same trick? But I said, "No, I cannot do that. David was a man. He had the facility to go to the forest to stay in caves etc, but where could I go?

While thinking like that and standing there, a mad girl came to me extending her hand and telling some unintelligent words. I then realized that my thoughts did not come from my mind, but was given to me by the Holy Spirit. I looked at her and Holy Spirit inspired me to dress like her.

I looked at her and saw her dress. Even otherwise I had observed how mad people dress up. Thoughts and ideas which usually I do not have came to my mind. I dressed as she had dressed. I studied how she worked, what she was doing. I went wherever she went. Keeping a distance between us I followed her. I came to know that she belonged to a group of wanderers.

A group of people like wanderers can be seen everywhere in Trivandrum District over footpaths and also in most of the Government lands pitching tents and living there. I mingled among them, slept there in a corner spreading paper or cloth. What they ate I also ate. I did not come to that stage to murmur and say, "Why have I fallen down to this much low degree that I had to eat this food which these people eat." This was not what God taught me. What God taught me was, "these people who do not know God, who do not have a place to sleep, no food to eat, no help from anywhere for them. They eat the rotten staled food from garbage cans of hotels or what are being thrown from fruit stalls, they roam about aimlessly in the streets begging, when night comes they sleep in the same streets, in the morning they and their children rise up and go happily, joyfully, leaping and jumping. God cares even for these who do not know Him." If God can care for them how much more He will care for me who knows God and I praised God thinking all these things.

When God brought the Israelites out of Egypt and because they murmured, God made them to go round the wilderness for forty years, but my God did not sit in heaven unconcerned about their welfare. The proof that God was with them can be understood from the fact that the Israelites could survive and reach their destination unharmed. The land they had to pass through was uninhabited, having extreme cold as well as hot climates, where they had to face danger everywhere. They had to pass through a desert where there was no facility. But God walked with them in a pillar of cloud at day time, in a pillar of fire at night. He provided them with manna for food and when they desired He gave them quail. When we go through trials and tribulations He will not leave us to our fate, but will be with us and enable us to pass through those hurdles.

So I believe that when I spread paper and cloth on the footpath and laid down to sleep, God was also there with me. I thank God for the love of my Lord.

Ministry is a calling not a job

By Sheela Isaac

May be, you are in ministry since long, but have you ever thought about it or questioned yourself whether you are in ministry because God had called you or is it just a money making job as any other secular job? It is a big question indeed. If it is just a job, then you are accountable for it before God. One day every person will have to stand before God to give an account of everything what they are doing today. Have you ever thought that if it is just a job for you, then you are ruining the lives of many? How? If you are not a saved person you are stopping many from knowing the truth and there by stopping them from going to heaven. Jesus looked at the Priests and Pharisees, who give laws but do not follow the laws themselves and said,

Luke 11:52 "Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered." Mat 5:20 "For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven."

Bible gives many examples which clearly state that ministry is indeed a calling. It begins with salvation i.e. change of heart. Look at the story of the Samaritan Woman (John 4). The Bible tells us that she was a sinful woman. When I was in India all those years I had heard about the Samaritan Woman as a prostitute, but I don't find anywhere in the Bible that she was a prostitute. Bible tells us that when Jesus meets her at the well, He asks her for a drink. John 4:7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." Later Jesus says to her, go and call your husband and come back." John 4:16 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." John 4:17 The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have well said, 'I have no husband,' John 4:18 "for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly."

Jesus already knew the sinful lifestyle of hers but He just wanted to hear it from her mouth. That is called confession. Unless and until a person confesses and repents from their sins, salvation never comes. Today many are not saved though they have heard about Jesus and have heard the stories of the Bible. The reason is that they never go through the steps as the Samaritan woman had followed. Jesus asked a simple question, "go and call your husband." Here, she could have different choices. 1. She could have ignored this question. 2. She could have replied something else. 3. She could have hidden the situation she was in. 4. She could have told the truth.

She told the truth. The choices we make in our lives decide our future and fate. If we confess our sin and tell the truth to Lord Jesus we will have chance to get rid of our sin and receive a place in heaven but if we fail to do it things will go otherwise. She said, "I have no husband." She was right. She was living with a man out of wedlock. Not only that, but she had five husbands previously. She was going through the dating and divorce process over and over again. Jesus was trying to tell her that it is SIN. A sinful person can't go to heaven unless and until he/she repents and turns and decides to live a clean and holy life. Here Jesus was trying to point out the sin in which she was living, Jesus was trying to tell her that her sinful life could keep her out of heaven. When she confesses her sin before Jesus and says I have no husband, Jesus plainly reveals to her how bad her life was. Jesus said to her, John 4:17-18 "You have well said, 'I have no husband,' "for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly." She told the truth before Jesus. That's what brought her deliverance.

1. Confession of sin is the first important step, which brings salvation.
2. Confession in front of Jesus is the most important step for forgiveness of sin. If you confess your sins/misdeeds before anybody else than Jesus that confession would do nothing of benefit for you.

As soon as she received forgiveness of sin she becomes a preacher. Can you imagine that it is the first important step which opens the door for you to become a minister of the Gospel? You can proclaim the Good news only after you know what the Good news is. You just can't become a preacher because somebody hired you and you are getting wages. It totally disqualifies you for being a minister of the Gospel (Good news). God's ministry is not a mere business but it is a serious step toward a deeper relationship with Jesus. Unless you know your master (Jesus) as your personal savior you can't be an effective witness before others.

John 4:28, "The woman then left her water pot, went her way into the city, and said to the men,
John 4:29, "Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"
John 4:30, "Then they went out of the city and came to Him.

First, she confessed her sins and left her sins there and then she went out and proclaimed the good news saying that she had found Messiah the Christ. She said, "He told me everything which I did, could this be the Christ." Thus she proclaimed that He is God Who knows everything. That is the testimony which makes one an effective preacher. As soon as she received forgiveness of sin she wanted to tell everybody about this deliverance. That is Gospel, the Good News. In other words she declares to the people, "see I have found the way to heaven, I have received forgiveness of my sin. So you can also have it by coming to Jesus. That is the Good News. If you haven't experienced that goodness of God and forgiveness of sin how can you be an effective minister? You can't. She not only proclaimed the good news but because of her preaching, many believed and came to Jesus. In the Bible we can see that many could find Jesus because of this Samaritan woman.

John 4:39 -42, "And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I ever did." So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. And many more believed because of His own word. Then they said to the woman, "Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world."

If you want to become an effective preacher you need to get rid of sin and need to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior that is what gives you eligibility to become a worthy minister of the Gospel.

If you look at the life of the demon possessed man in Gadarenes, he was possessed by many demons and his condition was very pathetic. But when Jesus comes and delivers him he becomes a normal person.

Mark 5:15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.
Mark 5:18 And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him.
Mark 5:19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you."
Mark 5:20 And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.

He wanted to stay with Jesus but what Jesus said to him, 'go home to your friends and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you.' And he began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him. Here again the demon-possessed man began to preach the good news when he received deliverance and healing.

Here we find two things.
1. When a person gets saved he/she can't keep quiet but they sure tell their family and friends what great things Jesus had done for them.
2. It is God's will that when a person gets salvation/deliverance he/she should glorify God and proclaim it to others.

Every true ministry begins with a change of heart and deliverance. Are you telling others what God had done for you? Are you telling how to get rid of sin and live a clean life? Are you proclaiming the goodness of Jesus? Are your messages Good News for others? I would like you to ponder on these thoughts.
