By Sherly Isaac

Christmas is around the corners. Markets and streets have already been decorated with different types of, lightings and goodies. But very often when we see all the hussle and bussle of the festival, we feel as if we are drifting away from the real meaning of Christmas. But in this Christmas season, let us take our eyes off from all these stuff and let us focus on the real meaning of Christmas.

600 years prior to the birth of Jesus, prophet Isaiah prophesied in Isa 9:6, "For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

One of the titles of the Messiah was Counselor. A counselor is he who gives counsel or advise. The whole Bible tells us that God wants to be our counselor and wants to guide us in the right path. Bible tells scores of stories of how marvelously God leads His people, who hear His voice and obey Him. There were times when they had no idea what to do or what to speak but when they asked God, He led them in the right direction. He gave them the right counsel, what to do and what not to do in that particular situation.

Nehemiah was a cupbearer of King Artaxerxes. Once when he was before the king he looked at the face of Nehemiah and said, "Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing but sorrow of heart." So Nehemiah became dreadfully afraid and then he replied, "May the king live forever! Why should my face not be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' tombs, lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire?" Further we read in Neh 2:4, that the king said to him, "What do you request?" So Nehemiah prayed to the God of heaven."

We see that Nehemiah prayed to God in that critical moment when he was in front of the king and when he was asking Nehemiah what his request was? After praying he replied to the king, "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' tombs, that I may rebuild it." And Bible tells further that the King allowed him to go to Judah and to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Even today how much important it is for us to have a divine Counselor with us who can give us the right advise, what to do in certain situations and what not. When Jesus was about to leave this world and when He saw the sad faces of His disciples, He said in John 16:13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come." Today we can have our own personal counselor who will tell us things that we can expect on our way and He will tell us what to do in that situation.

I remember when I came to USA and started working in a company, I had no idea about going to office by train or by bus because my brother picked me up and dropped me everyday. It was Christmas week and most of the workers were on leave. While I was working, one of the managers from another department came and told me, "All are leaving and office would be empty by 2 PM." He also said, "If you want to leave, you can do so." I said OK. I called home and there was no one at home, only the answering machine was picking. I held the receiver and sat frozen to my seat. "Oh, what would I do now Lord," I thought? Few moments later my assistant manager told me the same thing and asked me, "how will you go home?" I replied that, "Usually my brother comes to pick me up but it seems he is not at home." He said to me, "call once again and see whether they have come back or not otherwise I will drop you at your home." I was just new to that office and new in America so I just prayed a very quick prayer in my heart, "Lord, please tell me whether I should go with him or not?" The answer came in "yes". And I came home safely.

How wonderful it is when the Holy Spirit lives in us and guides us. Holy Spirit is none other than the Spirit of God about whom Jesus promised to give us. After Jesus left the world, all the disciples gathered together to pray and they received the Holy Spirit. They were led by Holy Spirit and they walked in the leading of God. God wants us to receive Holy Spirit in our lives and be guided by His counsel. If you have not yet had this experience ask God. He will fill you with His Holy Spirit.

His name will be called Wonderful

By Sherly Isaac

Isa 9:6, "For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

When God created this world, He made it wonderful, a wonderful place to live in where there was no sin, no violence, no hatred, no wrongdoings, nothing but a perfect world. The first book of the Bible tells us that when He created everything, He looked and saw that it was beautiful and wonderful. Bible also tells us that He is holy God and there is no sin in Him as we read in 1 John 3:5, "And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin."

Everything was perfect and wonderful, but today we do not see this wonderful world as described in Genesis first chapter. What happened to this world that everything crumbled down and this world became an ugly and distasteful place? Third chapter of Genesis tells us about the fall of Adam and Eve. When God created the first man and woman He told them that they should not eat the fruit of the tree that was in the midst of the garden. He also told them, that the day they will eat it, they would die. But they could not resist themselves and finally they fell into temptation. They ate the fruit of the tree. By disobeying God, they sinned against Him and they lost all their blessings. God sent them away from the Garden of Eden. Sin entered in this world and corrupted the wonderful world created by God Himself. Sin destroyed the wonderful human beings created in the very image and likeness of God. They were lost forever.

But God could not see them in sin and dying and going to hell fire. He decided to come down and save His creation. That's how the prophet Isaiah prophesied, "For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful...". Yes, Messiah came in this world to fix this world and to make this world once again wonderful. He came in this world to take away the wickedness, violence, curse and sin from this world and make this place a wonderful place. In order to do that He even did not care about His life but He humbled Himself and came down. He is the richest one, all the gold and silver is His, but He was born in the poorest home to give us richness of soul. He is the creator, but He came down in the form of His own creation to save us, so that we could live with Him forever and forever, so that we could have a wonderful life, so that we could enjoy in His presence forever.

Yes, He came in this world to give us this wonderful life - a holy life, a life full of peace, joy and happiness. If you do not have this wonderful life, you need Christ to be born in the manger of your heart. In this Christmas will you invite this wonderful Savior to come and be your Lord and Savior so that He could transform you as a wonderful person?

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 12th Aug. 2008

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 12th Aug. 2008
