When we hear the word “slave”, our generation does not understand the real meaning of the word 'slave' and the horrid tortures through which they had gone. It was a very cruel practice more than a century ago even within America. The pages of History tell us how their hearts could have bled when the members of one family is sold to different masters thereby separating them from each other. More than that they had to go through unspeakable tortures along with hard labor under their masters. Even a small mistake on their part led their masters to whip them and lash them badly.

When Abraham Lincoln the president of USA saw their hardship and heartbreaks, he could not bear the pain. He worked very hard and used his power to free them from slavery. On April 4, 1865 Abraham Lincoln and his son walked through the streets of Richmond when one group of Newly freed slaves cried out saying, "Glory, Hallelujah!" and fell to their knees before Mr. Lincoln. The President motioned for them to rise. "Don't kneel to me." he told them. "You must kneel to God only and thank Him for your freedom." "Liberty is your birthright. God gave it to you as he gave it to others, and it is a sin that you have been deprived of it for so many years."

But Abraham Lincoln had to pay a great price for the freedom which he managed to give to them with his own blood. He was assassinated just ten days later.

Freedom! It is not cheap. If we enjoy freedom today in our nation, it is because of the sacrifice of our brave soldiers who gave their lives for our country.

Once Jesus was talking to a group of people and He said, John 8:34-36, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Jesus came in this world to make us free from our sins. On the cruel cross He shed His precious blood and gave His life for us so that we could come out of our sins and have eternal life. In Isa 61:1-2 we read, "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,”

Bible tells us that we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. With our sins we cannot face the Holy God. Unless our sins are forgiven, hell is waiting for us. But thanks be to God who sent His only Son to die for us. His love is greater than anyone’s love in this world. He said in John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.”

Today His precious blood is available for the remission of our sins. Come to Jesus and get the freedom of your soul that no one could give you in this world except Jesus. And enjoy the great peace and joy that comes with freedom of our souls.

Intimate Relationship with God

If you look at the life of Joseph (Jesus’ earthly father) you will find that he was in constant contact with God. If you go through Mathew chapter 1 and 2 you will clearly see that God was directing him constantly through dreams and through angels. Here we see that he was getting several instructions from God. Let’s see what they are?

1. The Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.

Here we find that Joseph was engaged to Mary and before they could marry he finds out that Mary was with child. It might have been a great shocker for him. He might have been very much confused with this situation and did not know how to respond to it. Bible says that he being a just man, he decides to leave Mary secretly. Why? According to Jewish custom of those days if a girl is found with child before she was married they used to stone her to death. Mat 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.

As he was pondering over the matter, an angel of the Lord appears to him in a dream and tells him that Mary is not a corrupt girl but was conceived through the spirit of God (Holy Spirit). Mat 1:20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit." Suppose if Joseph was not a righteous man and if he was unable to hear God’s voice, the outcome in this situation might have been very different. Here we find that not only did Joseph hear God’s voice but also was very much willing to obey the voice of God without any doubt or reservations in his heart. That’s what happens when a person knows how to hear God and how to have intimate and close relationship with Jesus.

Later on we find many more similar experiences of Joseph.

2. Again the Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.

Mat 2:13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him."

Here, the angel warns him of the coming danger because king Herod had decided to kill all the children around Jerusalem who were under two years. What a great life was of Joseph who was in constant touch with the almighty God, who knew how God speaks and how those instructions were valuable for him and his family’s safety.

3. Third time angel appears to Joseph in a dream.

Mat 2:19 –20, “But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child's life are dead."

If you look at the life of David, you will find the same thing happening with him. Bible says that he was a man after God’s own heart. He enquired every time before he proceeded for war. He knew that only God can give him the right counsel at the right time. 1 Sam 23:2 – 4, “Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I go and attack these Philistines?" And the LORD said to David, "Go and attack the Philistines, and save Keilah." But David's men said to him, "Look, we are afraid here in Judah. How much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?" Then David inquired of the LORD once again. And the LORD answered him and said, "Arise, go down to Keilah. For I will deliver the Philistines into your hand."

You and I also needed the same experience in our lives. We need to know God’s will in every step of our life. God is not a respecter of persons. Intimate relationship with God is not an experience only for a certain group of people. It is for each and every person who is a child of God. If you are not having such experience, then something might be wrong with you. If you don’t hear God’s voice and don’t know how God speaks, then there must be two reasons behind it.

1. You are not saved that’s why you have no contact with God. or
2. It could be possible that you are a saved and spirit filled person but have not grown.

If you have no relationship with Jesus in any way or if you are not saved then it is natural that you can’t hear God’s voice. You can’t have dreams and visions, which comes from God. If you are a saved and spirit filled person it is quite possible that you are not hearing anything from God. The reason is that you have not grown spiritually and you are at the babe’s stage where you are only drinking milk and can’t eat meat. You need to grow spiritually so that you may not lose the best of God’s blessings in your life. The basic need for spiritual growth is Bible reading and prayer on a daily basis. Without these two you can’t grow spiritually. Apart from this, a holy life and a longing desire to live a clean life is also very much needed. These are the things, which make us to grow spiritually and go closer and closer to God. This is the process that you read God’s word and correct your life in the light of it. God’s word is like a mirror which when read, you see your own reflection through it. The word shows that telling lie is sin, cheating others is sin, making bad plans against others is sin, drinking, adultery, greed, foul speaking etc. are all sin. When you read the word and compare your life in response to those verses, you figure out what correction is needed in your life. That’s why Bible reading is so important for a believer.

When you go closer to God and when He sees you trustworthy He begins to reveal things which no one else can tell you. God begins to show deep mysteries through dreams, visions, heavenly visitations and through various ways. I am not talking about something new here. If you read the Bible carefully you will find that the Old Testament prophets as well as the New Testament disciples had similar experiences. Even ordinary people like Cornelius had the same experience because God is not a God of partiality. Look at the life of Paul and Peter who had similar experiences. Paul had heavenly visions and learned what was there and how heaven looked like while he was still on earth. Peter saw visions and knew what God was trying to tell him. God spoke to Cornelius a gentile about Peter through an angel. Why? Because he was a devout man who prayed always, who feared God and who gave money for God’s work. Acts 10:2 a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. He was an ordinary man like you and I. But God the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a vision. Acts 10:3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, "Cornelius!" Acts 10:5 "Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter.

We all need this kind of intimate relationship with our Savior. If you don’t have such experience you can get it by asking. If you are not saved please come to Jesus and receive Him into your life. May God bless you.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 13th May. 2008

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 13th May. 2008
