After Moses’ death great responsibility came upon Joshua to take the Israelites to the Promised Land. God spoke to him and gave him specific instruction how he could be successful and prosperous in his task which lay before him. The first thing which God spoke to him was In Josh 1:6-9 “Be strong and of good courage” as we read, "Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous…” Why Joshua needed to be strong and very courageous? The answer is in the next verses, “that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."Yes, great courage and strength is required to observe exactly what God commanded in His word. It needs real courage to stand for the God of the Bible and walk on His principles. It is easy to live as others live but it is not easy to take a stand for Jesus according to His holiness. It could be easy to participate in a drinking and dancing party because of lack of courage to say ‘no’ to those unworthy activities. It could be easy to accept bribe and steal money from the workplace, but not easy to say no to theft and bribery. It is always difficult to swim against the current. And God told Joshua to be very courageous and to be strong to follow the commandments of God. God gave the reason for doing it that would bring success and would make all his ways prosperous. A few weeks back I saw in TV about the courageous action of Rosa Parks who was an African American civil rights activist in Montgomery, Alabama. In the year 1955 she was traveling by bus. At that time according to the law black should relinquish their seats for whites. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus driver James Blake’s demand for a white man. She was arrested and put on trial. This incidence sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The organizer was Martin Luther King. If blacks had to go somewhere they walked and walked, did carpooling or took taxi. Within one year the bus company was bankrupted and was out of business.These few people put complete stop to racial segregation because they took great courage to act against atrocities done against humanity. Martine Luther King is known for his famous speach “I have a dream”. In his speech he spoke of his desire to see that blacks and whites coexist harmoniously as equals. He could not see that happening in his lifetime as he was assasinated. But now we are seeing the results of his work after many years.Second thing God told Joshua was that the Law of God may not depart from his mouth but he must meditate on it day and night so that he could be successful and victorious in everything. If we want to be victorious in our lives, if we want to be successful in our lives, we need to walk according to the word of God. This Word is not mere word but is life giving. This word can turn your defeats into victory. By reading and meditating we can know how to live a holy life. And when we do according to it, God blesses us and makes us prosperous.
Daniel and his three friends were taken to Babylone as prisoners. The king ordered to take some beautiful and intelligent young men to teach them the language and the literature of the Chaldeans. Daniel and his friends were chosen to be trained as Chaldeans (members of the class of the magi or astrologer-priests, sorcerers, enchanters, wizards and magicians). In the dictionary it says, “A person versed in occult learning.”Daniel and his friends were chosen for this type of training where they had to literally deal with demons and witchcraft. It was not the training for one day or one month but for three years. Ever wondered how these four men of God survived in that environment?Bible says in Dan 1:8, “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.”Daniel was determined that he would not defile himself so he kept himself away from those foods that could defile him. How food could defile a person. Jesus said in Rev 2:14, "But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.”Eating from the king’s table could have put them in trouble. I have heard many stories of witchcraft. If a person gives food on which witchcraft had been done, it could affect the person who takes the food physically, mentally or spiritually. But Daniel chose to stay away from those foods. The results were esthetic. He and his friends were looking better than others who ate from the prescribed menu. Bible says in Dan 1:17-20, “As for these four young men, God gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. Now at the end of the days, when the king had said that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. Then the king interviewed them, and among them all none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; therefore they served before the king. And in all matters of wisdom and understanding about which the king examined them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers who were in all his realm.”There is a God who is above magicians, astrologers, wizards and those who do witchcraft. His power is unlimited and He gives His blessings and bestows honor and victory to those who choose to walk in His ways. Second thing we see in the lives of Daniel and his friends was that they were loyal to the God of the Bible and were spending considerable time in prayer. Dan 6:10 says, “Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.”His prayer life and his determination to walk with God sustained him in the environment of witchcraft and sorcery and protected him from all the evil powers of darkness. Today also we can overcome any circumstance by the mighty power of God when we obey Him and when we are willing and determined to walk with Him.

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month.
